The Vancouver Whitecaps captain Jay DeMerit offered a vote of confidence to Joe Cannon after the veteran goalkeeper gave up a soft goal in last weekend's 2-1 loss to Portland.
"We live and die as a team," DeMerit said. "There's many games where Joe's kept us clean and made saves to keep us in games. Unfortunately it didn't go his way, but we all have to take that hit. We had other chances to win that game."
A 25-yard free kick by Franck Songo'o cleared the wall and dipped under Cannon's arms as he dived to his right. Coach Martin Rennie said, "Yeah, it was deflating. He has done very well for us this season. When we win we win as a group, and when we lose we lose as a group, and [Saturday] we all lose together."
"It's just part of being a goalie," Cannon said. "It just wasn't our night."
