[TULSA-NEW MEXICO] Freshman Bryce Follensbee scored the golden goal to lead Tulsa to a 2-1 win over New Mexico in
overtime on Friday night in the Hurricane Classic. The loss was the Lobos' first since 2010, ending a 23-game unbeaten streak.
“New Mexico played very well tonight, but we grinded
out a win,” Tulsa coach Tom McIntosh said. “We had a couple great chances in the first half and we started out the game well, but we
didn’t play as well in the second half. It was a good win against a very good team.”
Sophomore defender Matthew Gibbons put the
Lobos ahead in the 23rd minute but the game turned shortly thereafter when UNM’s Travis Campbell earned a red card for an intentional handball in the box.
Akron transfer Akeil Barrett tied the score with a penalty kick.
Follensbee put away a rebound from Matt
Boullt’s shot for his third goal of the season to give Tulsa the overtime victory.
“We played 60 minutes a man down and in that time we did great," said New Mexico
coach Jeremy Fishbein. "We out-shot them ten to four and corner kicks were in our favor five to nothing as well. We played really well and had really good
chances to score a second goal to finish it."
