[USA MEN] U.S. national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann called up 24 players for the 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Jamaica Sept. 7 and 11. The USA will be without stars Landon Donovan and Michael Bradley, both sidelined with injuries, but Clint Dempsey was recalled even though did not play in the first three weeks of the English Premier League season as he sought a transfer from Fulham. But Klinsmann said he was open to playing Dempsey against the Reggae Boyz if ...

“We’ll test his fitness level right away when he comes in,” Klinsmann said. “Based on all that information ... we can see how we play him in those two very, very important World Cup qualifiers.”

Dempsey's move to Tottenham was not finalized until hours before the end of the summer transfer deadline.

“First of all, we are happy that this whole thing was finalized,” Klinsmann said. “It is really important now that Clint can put this behind him. It was not all the time pretty what happened the last couple of months. ... Obviously he dragged this with him the whole summer. He was concerned about it, which is normal. I’m happy the decision was finally made and finally the move happened. Now he comes in and we’ll evaluate him.”

Klinsmann initially called in a 25th player, uncapped speedster Josh Gatt, but he suffered a hamstring injury played for Norwegian champion Molde on Sunday.

Also injured is left back Edgar Castillo of Mexican club Tijuana.

Twenty of the 24 players play abroad. Of the four MLS players, Sean Johnson (Chicago Fire) and Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake) take turns as the third keeper.

Players began reporting to Miami on Sunday, where they will train for three days prior to departing for Kingston.
