One place where the transfer window has not yet closed and where clubs have tons of money to throw around is Russia.
Russian champion Zenit St. Petersburg, backed by Russian energy
giant Gazprom, spent a record $100 million -- $50 million each -- on Brazil striker Hulk and Belgium midfielder Axel
Witsel, signed to five-year deals from Portuguese clubs Porto and Benfica, respectively.
"We were trying to sign them before the Sept. 3 deadline for the Champions League so they
can play for us in that competition as well as the Russian league," Zenit spokesman Dmitry Tsimmerman said.
The Russian transfer market remains
open for another week.
