No one had a bigger game on Day 1 of the UEFA Champions League than 27-year-old Brazilian midfielder Rafael Bastos. He returned to his former club, Braga,
and scored both goals for CFR Cluj, the Romanian champion, in its 2-0 win.
"It was dream come true for me to score two goals against my former club," said Rafael. "Furthermore, to do so in the UEFA Champions League is something amazing. I want to congratulate our entire team, the coach and our fans for this huge success."
Rafael arrived at Braga in January 2010 but lasted only six months before falling out with the Portuguese club and moving to Romania. He is one of a dozen Portuguese or Brazilian players who play for Cluj, which hosts Manchester United in its second game.
"Despite the victory," added Rafael, "we are not thinking beyond the group stage – we are taking things one match at a time."
