Boris Vukcevic, a 22-year-old Croatian-born midfielder who had started in every game for German Bundesliga team Hoffenheim this season, is in critical condition in hospital after
being involved in a major car accident.
He reportedly lost control of his car and crashed into a truck coming into the opposite direction. The truck driver escaped with minor injuries, but Vukcevic was rushed to a Heidelberg hospital.
"This news has shaken us,'' said Hoffenheim's general manager Andreas Muller. "The team, the coach and everybody here are shocked. Our thoughts are with Boris and his family.''
Vukcevic, born in Osijek, Croatia, came through the Stuttgart youth academy and moved to Hoffenheim in 2008. He has played 78 Bundesliga matches for Hoffenheim, scoring six goals, and has also played six times for Germany's Under-21 team.
