[WORLD CUP 2014 QUALIFYING: Concacaf] With its back to the wall, Costa Rica traveled to San Salvador and beat El Salvador, 1-0, to all but assure itself of second place in Group B and a berth in next year's Hexagonal. Jose Cubero scored in the first half, and the Ticos then held off El Salvador, which had two players ejected late in the game. In Toronto, Canada beat Cuba, 3-0, in a match for which Cuba showed up with only 11 players. Four other players were reported to have defected before the game. The win did little to change the stakes for Canada, though. It must gain at least a draw against Honduras Tuesday afternoon in San Pedro Sula to assure itself of a place in the Hexagonal.
