Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Chris Kirkland was hit in the face and then shoved to the ground by a Leeds United fan during a tense 1-1 draw at Hillsborough on Friday night. The assault, which was captured on video, prompted a tirade from Wednesday coach Dave Jones in which he called Leeds supporters “vile animals” and demanded that they banned from all away games for the rest of the 2012/2013 English Championship season.

The attack came moments after Leeds’ 76th minute equalizer. A fan ran out onto the field from the away section and then blindsided Kirkland by pushing both hands into his face. The goalkeeper then collapsed and had to receive lengthy treatment before continuing. Local police have said they will do all they can to make sure the attacker, who got away, is brought to justice.
