Goals from Diego Milito (2) and Rodrigo Palacio helped Inter Milan end the longest active unbeaten streak in world soccer by beating Juventus, 3-1, at the JuventusStadium on Saturday.
Juve’s 49-game unbeaten run began on May 15, 2011. The loss to Inter was the Italian champion’s first in the Juventus Stadium, which it opened in Septemberof 2011. The feat is especially remarkable considering it was achieved with a relatively young and inexperienced manager (Antonio Conte) and that the Bianconeri was coming offback-to-back seventh place finishes in Serie A.
Among Europe’s top leagues, Juve’s unbeaten streak is now the second-longest run in history, tied with Arsenal of the EnglishPremier League, which also went unbeaten for 49 consecutive games in 2003-2004. The longest unbeaten run in history goes to AC Milan, which went 58 games unbeaten between 1991 and 1993. This,WSJ.com’s Gabriel Marcotti points out, was achieved during a time when Serie A was head and shoulders above other leagues in the world.
