[NOTRE DAME-INDIANA] Indiana will make its first trip to the NCAA quarterfinals since 2008 thanks to a 2-1 double overtime win on Eriq Zavaleta‘s goal at No. 1 Notre Dame Sunday afternoon.
The Hoosiers improve to 13-5-3 on the season and will face the winner of North Carolina with a trip to theCollege Cup on the line.
“What a win for this program,” said IU coach Todd Yeagley, who took over in 2009. “The team playeda complete 90 (minutes) and we took it to a very good Notre Dame team. They were a fantastic team this year and we knew we had to be at our best. Today our discipline and the way we executed our planmade the difference.”
The win reversed a 1-0 loss to the Irish during the regular season.
Neither team produced many quality chances in the first half, and the matchwas scoreless at the half. The second half was a different story.
Notre Dame took a 1-0 lead in the 54th minute when Harrison Shipp found
The lead didn’t last long as
Less than two minutes into the secondovertime period, Zavaleta ended the match with his 17th goal of the year. Kotlov flicked a ball on to Zavaleta, who headed it home his sixth game-winning goal of the season.
“I haven’t scored a tournament goal with this team and there isn’t a better moment to have it,” Zavaleta said. “I am so proud of this team. This is the best I have seenthis team play in a long time.”
“As I’ve said before, anytime Notre Dame plays Indiana it’s going to be a great game and it was a great game today,” saidNotre Dame head Bobby Clark. “It ebbed and flowed. We had periods where we played very well and they had periods where they played very well. I thoughtthey brought a lot of intensity. They opened the game well. We defended really well during that time and didn’t give up many chances.”
