[NASL] Fans waiting to see the rebirth of the New York Cosmos will have to wait a little longer. The club announced that it will delay its launch until the 2013
NASL fall season. The league will adopt spring and fall championships -- along the lines of split seasons played in Latin America -- and it will allow the Cosmos "to build our staff and operational
capabilities in a professional manner," according to Cosmos COO Erik Stover.
The Cosmos will be eligible for the 2013 NASL title -- to be competed
between the spring and fall champions -- but will not play in the 2013 U.S. Open Cup.
The New York Cosmos will play at Hofstra University’s Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, where the
original Cosmos won their first NASL title in 1972.
Former MLS star Giovanni Savarese has been promoted to head coach. He most recently served as
director of the Cosmos Academy and manager of the Cosmos U-23 team that played in the PDL.
