Big changes in MLS schedule

[MLS SPOTLIGHT] Major League Soccer released its 2013 schedule with a notable twist: Week 3 on March 16-17 will be "Rivalry Week" featuring such clasicos as LA Galaxy-Chivas USA, Seattle-Portland and New York-D.C. United. This year's schedule avoids some of the imbalances in the 2012 schedule marked by congested periods and long layoffs. But it comes at a price.

Yet despite the claim that no matches will "overlap directly" with World Cup 2014 qualifying matches -- MLS doesn't play on Tuesdays and rarely plays on Fridays, the two days of FIFA action -- the league will not shut down in 2013. Over the 10-day periods surrounding the last four double fixture dates of the regular season, MLS is scheduled to play 28 games vs. eight over the same dates in 2012. There are almost as many Jamaicans and Hondurans as Americans who could miss league action because of qualifying conflicts ...

Some schedule highlights:

-- ESPN returns for its 18th season with live coverage of 20 regular-season games -- eight games on ESPN and 12 on ESPN2 and nearly all on Sunday.

-- The NBC Sports Group, in the second season of its three-year agreement with MLS, will air 41 regular season games -- 38 on NBC Sports Network and three on NBC. It will air three live games -- one on NBC and two on NBC Sports Network -- and provide unprecedented coverage of all the league’s action on March 16 with a special studio show during Rivalry Week.

-- Univision’s lineup of 26 regular-season games begin on Univision with reigning MLS champion LA Galaxy’s opener on March 3 against the Chicago Fire. The other 25 live matches will air on newly branded UniMas (formerly known as TeleFutura).

-- Regional broadcast schedules will be announced by the clubs as they are finalized and other games will again be available on MLS's Direct Kick television package and/or on www.MLSsoccer.com via subscription. Note: All times ET. Schedule is subject to change.

Will the Galaxy be visiting NY/NJ this year? They didn't last year. What a travesty, didn't have chance to see Keane/Donovan/McGee live in person
