Lionel Messi is not only the best player in the world, he is also the most popular men's
player in the United States by a long shot.
According to a 2012 Soccer Insights survey, 23.4 percent of U.S. fans said the four-time winner of the Ballon d'Or was their most popular
player, almost three times the next two most popular players: Cristiano Ronaldo (8.14%) and Landon Donovan (8.1%). Other
Americans in the top 10 were Clint Dempsey (fifth) and Tim Howard (seventh).
Messi was also first among
non-Hispanic and Hispanic fans by a wide margin. Donovan and Dempsey were ranked 2-3 among non-Hispanic fans, and Ronaldo and Mexican Javier Hernandez trailed
Messi among Hispanic fans.
