[MLS 2013 COUNTDOWN] Seattle Sounders coach Sigi Schmid has seen just about everything in his long coaching career, but he says this is new: defender Patrick Ianni, injured his left foot during a jump test and was walking around training camp at the Starfire Sports Complex wearing a protective boot and using crutches.

“That's a first," Schmid told reporters. “That's a history maker. I don't know how anybody injures himself on the jump test, but he did. Landed funny, I guess. So we've just got to wait and see what the MRI says."

The Sounders were anxiously awaiting the results of an MRI on Ianni's foot. They granted their 2012 Defender of the Year Jeff Parke's request to be traded back to his hometown Philadelphia Union and have projected Ianni to start alongside Jhon Kennedy Hurtado.

Options in case Ianni is out: Zach Scott and rookie Eriq Zavaleta.

MLS PRESEASON SCHEDULE:

Real Salt Lake report

CHIVAS USA. While Chivas USA's goal is to return to its roots and field a Mexican(-American) team in the tradition of Chivas de Guadalajara, it isn't there yet. The team that started the opening preseason game against UC Irvine Saturday consisted of three Americans, three Mexicans, two Mexican-Americans and one Peruvian, Ecuadoran and Colombian.

But only seven of the 27 players Coach Jose Luis Sanchez used were non-Spanish speakers, and veterans Danny Califf and Shalrie Joseph were not with the team. Asked if Chivas USA was out to displace non Mexican-Americans, "El Chelis" told the Chivas USA blog Goat Parade:

"The base of my team today is [Dan] Kennedy, [Bobby] Burling, [Ben] Zemanski, [Tristan] Bower [Bowen]. Listen, none of these players was born in Xochimilco and they're the base of my team. No one is going to tell you this, but I'll say it. They have to see that the reason some players left is due to their high salary. Our budget then becomes higher. Players with the higher salaries needed to leave, not because they don't speak Spanish. The reason is economic. Check out the players that stayed. The highest salaried player doesn't reach half of the salary of the departed players. That is the reason."

COLUMBUS.
The Crew signed 29-year-old Agustin Viana, who was born in Chicago, raised in Uruguay and plied his trade across Europe (Greece, Italy and Romania) and South America (Uruguay and Brazil). Viana, who is a left-footed player capable of playing left back or central midfield, comes to Columbus from Uruguayan Primera Division club Bella Vista.

REAL SALT LAKE. Javier Morales was the only expected 2013 regular in Monday’s starting lineup as Real Salt Lake dropped a 2-0 decision to the Danish U-20 national team at Grande Sports World in Arizona. RSL played three academy players: Jose Hernandez, Jordan Allen and Benji Lopez. Among the trialists were Jamaican Khari Stephenson (ex-San Jose) and for U.S. U-17 Peri Marosevic, who moved to the Croatian second division last season after playing for FC Dallas and Toronto FC.
