Brazil unveiled the official poster for the 2014 World Cup on Wednesday in Rio de Janeiro.

Former Brazilian world champions Amarildo, Carlos Alberto (of New York Cosmos fame), Bebeto and Ronaldo and women's star Marta took part in the ceremonies that were postponed from Monday following the nightclub fire in Santa Maria that killed 235 people early Sunday morning.

The official poster, which shows a map of Brazil bordered by two players challenging for a ball and features bright colors to show off Brazil's rich flora and fauna, was designed by Brazilian creative agency Crama.

It was selected ahead of two other designs by a panel that included Ronaldo and Bebeto.

“The poster is a great example of Brazil’s creative excellence," said FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke. "The winning entry will no doubt serve as a splendid visiting card for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, that is due to kick off in 498 days. The poster highlights the significance and sparkle of the event as well as the fascination of football in a very emotive way."

Ronaldo, who joined the organizing committee in December 2011, said the poster was an important step for showcasing Brazil and the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and abroad.

"It is important to convey the message of a country that is modern, innovative, sustainable, happy, united and, of course, passionate about football,” said Ronaldo.

The poster follows the presentation of official posters of each of the 12 venue cities and selection of an armadillo named Fuleco as the official mascot.

Nice to see that the poster evokes Saci, I suspect the boys in Switzerland did not see the influence, but it will clear to every Brasilian. It will of course be Saci who is blamed for lost luggage, the dust devils at airports created by the rising Matita Pereira, but will his agility with the ball be enough for Brasil to win at home ?
