[HOMEGROWN WATCH] Less than a year after he signed a homegrown contract, U.S. U-20 Shane O'Neillmade his first MLS start for the Colorado Rapids in their 2-2 tie with the Portland Timbers on Saturday. The 18-year-old defender, who was born in Ireland, almost came close to scoring in the 3rd minute when his looping header hit the far post and he hit the other post on the rebound.

O'Neill, who started for the USA in Under-20 World Cup qualifying, was pressed into action in the Rapids backline when Diego Calderon was injured and Drew Moor was suspended.

O'Neill had come on as a sub in the Rapids' previous game against the LA Galaxy.

O'Neill grew up in Boulder, where his father, Colm, owns the popular Irish pub Conor O'Neill's.
