[EUROPA LEAGUE] Clint Dempsey scored twice for Tottenham -- his first club goals since Jan. 27 -- but it was not enough as Spurs' 2-2 tie at FC Basel left the teams tied 4-4 on aggregate, and the Swiss club won on penalty kicks 4-1 to advance to the semifinals of the Europa League.

Dempsey put Spurs in front midway through the first half when he pounced on a loose ball, went around Basel keeper Yann Sommer and slotted the ball into the empty net.

Mohamed Salah and Aleksandar Dragovic beat 41-year-old American goalkeeper Brad Friedel to put Basel ahead, but Dempsey evened the score when he poked the ball past Sommer for his 10th goal of the season.

Also through to the semifinals were Chelsea, Benfica and Fenerbahce.
