FA Cup Preview: Pressure on Man City

Wigan Athletic heads into tomorrow’s FA Cup final against Manchester City at Wembley on the back of a calamitous 3-2 loss at home to Capital One Cup winner Swansea City, a result that has left the Latics’ Premier League future hanging by a thread with just two games to play. It was a game characterized by some awful defending, with several regular first team defenders missing through injury. Wingers Jean Beausejour and Albert Crusat and defenders Maynor Figueroa and Ivan Ramis will definitely miss tomorrow’s final, while the possible return of center back Antolin Alcaraz could be a boost for the Latics.

Coach Roberto Martinez has said that staying in the Premier League is more important than winning the FA Cup, which highlights perhaps the the one thing Wigan has going for it ahead of tomorrow’s game: the fact that all of the pressure will be on Manchester City.

Roberto Mancini’s men have already secured a UEFA Champions League place for next season, so they have nothing left to play for except the FA Cup. Mancini may also feel that he needs to win the trophy if he is to prove to City’s owners that he deserves another season in charge. Marauding center midfielder Yaya Toure is City’s only injury doubt heading into tomorrow’s final. (FOX begins its FA Cup final broadcast Saturday at noon ET.)
