Altidore moves to Sunderland for record $13 million
[AMERICANS ABROAD] Jozy Altidore broke his own American transfer record when he completed his move from Dutch Cup champion
AZ to Sunderland for a fee estimated at $13 million.
Villarreal had paid $10 million five years ago when Altidore moved to Spain from MLS's New York Red Bulls.
failed to earn a starting job with the Yellow Submarine and moving on loan to clubs in Spain, England and Turkey, Villarreal sold Altidore to AZ in a deal estimated to be $1.9 million.
The previous American record for a transfer fee between foreign clubs was Clint Dempsey's $9.6 million move to Tottenham from Fulham last summer.
