Sunderland is close to landing Juventus midfielder Emanuele Giaccherini, the Daily Mail reports, claiming that the Serie A champion’s recent spending spree, which includes strikers Carlos Tevez and Fernando Llorente, has forced the club to accept a cut-rate price for the Italy international.

Giaccherini has struggled to get in the Juve first team, but he started and played well for Italy in its recent run to the Confederations Cup Semifinal.

According to the report, Juve will sell the versatile player to Sunderland for close to $10.3 million. His agent recently suggested that Giaccherini could be sold this summer. “If an interesting offer comes in, then, of course, we will consider it,” agent Furio Valcareggi said. “We have to plan for the future, particularly with the World Cup finals just 12 months away, and if Emanuele is not going to be starting for Juve, then maybe we should look for a situation where he is playing every week.”

On Wednesday, Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio completed his seventh signing of the summer when midfielder El-Hadji Ba agreed to a three-year contract with the club. U.S. international Jozy Altidore, Valentin Roberge, Modibo Diakite, Cabral, David Moberg Karlsson and Duncan Watmore are the others. Read the original story...
