Guus Hiddink on Monday resigned as manager of Anzhi Makhachkala. The 66-year-old Dutchman joined the big spending Russian club in February 2012, guiding it to third place in the Russian Premier League last season, where it was 11 points behind champion CSKA Moscow. He leaves the club in 13th place in the current campaign, where it has just one point after two games.
"I've always said that my mission with Anzhi would end when the club was able to develop and grow by itself without my participation," Hiddink said. The former Russian national team coach will be replaced by former Manchester United assistant Rene Muelensteen.
