Toronto hands Revs' costly loss
August 4th, 2013 11:38PM

[MLS REWIND: Week 23] The New England Revolution suffered a costly loss as it fell to Toronto FC, 1-0, at Gillette Stadium on Sunday night. Toronto FC used a second-minute goal from Matias Laba to earn just its fourth win in 22 games. The loss dropped the Revs back to .500 and left them in sixth place in the Eastern Conference, three points behind the surging Houston Dynamo.
The Revolution had two shots cleared off the goal line by the TFC defense in the first half, and Diego Fagundez's header clipped off the crossbar in the match's dying seconds.

The New York Red Bulls took over first place in the Eastern Conference Saturday with a 3-2 win over Sporting Kansas City in front of a sellout crowd of 21,304 at Sporting Park. The race tightened in the Western Conference, where only eight points separate the top eight teams.

-- Lloyd Sam came off the bench to score a goal and an assist and break a 1-1 deadlock for the Red Bulls, who were playing without injured star Tim Cahill. Sporting KC held out Graham Zusi, who suffered a quad strain in Wednesday's AT&T MLS All-Star Game. Sporting KC played like it was on a hangover from the week's festivities in Kansas City and conceded three horrible goals that prompted keeper Jimmy Nielsen to say he was "very, very embarrassed for our fans."

-- The Colorado Rapids stayed within three points of Real Salt Lake in the Western Conference when they twice came back from a goal down to earn a 2-2 tie that gave them the Subaru Rocky Mountain Cup for the first time since 2006. Colombian Jaime Castrillon's first goal of the season came off a cross from Jeff Klute -- his seventh assist of the season -- gave the Rapids a share of the points.

-- It was a big night for national team players coming back from the Gold Cup. Coach Jason Kreis credited goalie Nick Rimando with keeping RSL in the game against the Rapids. Chris Wondolowski scored twice in his first game back from national team duty in San Jose's 2-0 win over Chivas USA, and Eddie Johnson scored his first goal for Seattle in more than two months in its 3-0 win over FC Dallas, whose winless streak is now nine games. Will Bruin had a goal and an assist in Houston's 3-1 win over Columbus that moved the Dynamo into the top five in the Eastern Conference.

-- It was a rough night for former U.S. national team caption Carlos Bocanegra as he was red carded for a nasty challenge on Shea Salinas in Chivas USA loss at San Jose.

-- Recent acquisitions Luis Silva, Conor Doyle and Jared Jeffrey all scored for D.C. United, which beat Montreal, 3-1, for only its third win of the season.
