Onyewu parts company with Sporting
[AMERICANS ABROAD] Oguchi Onyewu has left Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon by mutual agreement. The 31-year-old defender
played one season for Sporting and spent last season on loan at Spanish club Malaga, where he saw limited action.
Portugal and Spain were the sixth and seventh European countries in which
he has played after France (Metz), Belgium (La Louviere and Standard Liege), England (Newcastle United), Italy (AC Milan) and the Netherlands (FC Twente).
He's never been the same since
injuring his knee in October 2009 playing for the USA in a World Cup qualifier.
He was recalled for the 2013 Gold Cup but replaced after the group stage. He played for the USA at the 2006
and 2010 World Cups and was one of the stars of the USA's 2-0 win over Spain at the 2009 Confederations Cup.
