[AMERICANS ABROAD] Aron Johannsson and Terrence Boyd, two young forwards who could be fighting for one playoff berth, will both use the Europa League this fall as a platform to show off their talents to U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann. Neither scored on Thursday, but Johannsson's AZ managed to win on the road in its group opener.

Johannsson came close in the second half of AZ's 1-0 win at Maccabi Haifa on fellow Icelandic striker Johann Berg Gudmundsson's late goal.

Boyd came on midway through the second half of Rapid's 1-0 loss at Swiss club FC Thun.

The only other American involved in the Europa League is Brad Friedel, who did not play in Tottenham's 3-0 win over Tromso of Norway.
