Host Tahiti beats USA for historic win
[BEACH SOCCER WORLD CUP] Host Tahiti qualified for the quarterfinals of the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup -- its first passage to the knockout stage of any FIFA
world championship -- with a 5-3 win over the USA on two goals from Angelo Tchen in the last minute of overtime.
The USA came back from 2-0 and 3-1
down to tie the score on goals by Mario Chimienti and Nick Pereira. The first U.S. goal was an own goal by Tchen.
The match featured 80 shots in the 39 minutes of play -- with a 45-34 advantage to the host Tiki Toa.
Spain beat the United Arab Emirates, 5-2 in the other Group A match. Spain and
Tahiti are through to the quarterfinals, while the USA and UAE are eliminated.
Group play ends Monday.
