[AMERICANS ABROAD] Contrary to published reports out of Germany that he intended to have knee surgery, Jermaine Jones said in a statement issued by U.S. Soccer that he will not be having surgery this week and remains fit and available for selection for Schalke 04 and the U.S. national team.

Following Schalke's 3-3 tie with Hoffenheim, Schalke 04 indicated Jones will be dropped for one game: the UEFA Champions League match against Basel this week. He earlier missed Schalke 04's UCL opener as he served a one-game suspension after picking up a red card in the second game of its playoff series.

“I have had some minor issues with my knee for a while, and the plan is to take care of it during the winter break,” said Jones. “Playing is obviously no problem. I will be in the team this weekend for the game against Augsburg and I’m ready to go for the national team if I get called in."

Knee surgery would have kept Jones out of the U.S. qualifying matches Oct. 11 and Oct. 15 against Jamaica and Panama and possibly the friendlies in November.

Sport Bild quoted Jones as saying he was using the layoff to "straighten out my meniscus."
