DFB Hands 'Ghost Goal' Case to FIFA

Hoffenheim is demanding a replay of its German Bundesliga game against Bayer Leverkusen last Friday after the winning goal, scored by Stefan Kiessling, flew into the goal threw the side netting, but was deemed a goal by referee Felix Brych nonetheless. Bayer went on to win the game 2-1.

While Hoffenheim originally appealed to the DFB, Germany’s soccer association, demanding that the game be replayed, the DFB has responded by handing the matter over to FIFA. “We can fully understand that such a ‘ghost goal’ is regarded as unjust. The reflexive call for a replay is understandable, but from the past we know that FIFA protects the referee’s decision,” DFB vice president Rainer Koch said. “What matters are which options the regulations and statutory provisions generally allow us, because FIFA is substantial in such a decision.”

As ESPN notes, FIFA has refused to replay games following similar "ghost goals" in the past, with the exception of a 1994 Thomas Helmer "ghost goal" between Bayern Munich and Nurnberg, which led to a replay. (Go HERE for video of Kiessling's phantom goal.)
