No. 1 Golden Bears fall for first time

[CALIFORNIA-SAN DIEGO: Men] No. 1 California's luck finally ran out. The Bears, who have shown a flair for the dramatic en route to a 10-0-2 start to the 2013 season, could not recover from Connor Brandt's shot from distance in the 52nd minute and fell, 1-0, for the first time.

“It’s a long season, the chances of losing a game in an 18-game season are probably greater than not,” said Cal coach Kevin Grimes. “It just happened to be today. [San Diego] played a very good match, certainly scored an opportunistic goal and we had some great chances too, especially in the second half. We had one hit the post and had one just trickle wide, easily we could have tied it and maybe force overtime, but it didn’t happen today. Today was their day, you’ve got to tip your cap to them and move on to next week.”

After Brandt put head, Cal had its chances but Connor Hallisey's shot slammed off of the far post and Steve Birnbaum's shot from about 35 yards out hooked inches wide of the post. Later, Ryan Neil was played in nicely by fellow midfielder Omid Jalali, but his shot went just wide of the Toreros' goal.
