Platini Endorses Hockey-Like Penalties Instead of Yellow Cards

In an interview with AS, UEFA President Michel Platini, discussed several rule changes that he would like to see implemented. One of the Frenchman’s ideas calls for yellow cards to be replaced by a penalty box as in hockey where the offending team would be forced to play a man down for 10-15 minutes.

When asked why, Platini said he is more concerned that an accumulation of yellow cards leading to a suspension is carried out against a third team, rather than the teams that have endured the offense. He believes a penalty box would be a fairer punishment because “that way, the benefit goes to the team he is playing against, in the same match, instead of a sanction by cards which is carried out against a third team, the next on the calendar."

Platini also added that goalkeepers should not be sent off when they concede a penalty. "It seems excessive," he said. "The penalty is itself already is punishment enough. "I think it's something that everyone in FIFA and UEFA agree, but one or two of the countries that make up the International Board are unwilling to change."

The former France and Juventus player said he would also like to see domestic cup champions automatically qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
