Western expansion continues with Colorado Springs team
[USL PRO] USL PRO continues its expansion west of the Mississippi with the award of an expansion franchise in Colorado Springs that will join the league for the
2015 season. The team will be owned and operated by Martin Ragain and Ragain Sports and is expected to play its home games at Sand Creek Stadium adjacent to the
Colorado Springs Sky Sox baseball facility.
“The momentum continues to build for USL PRO with the addition of a franchise in Colorado Springs for 2015,” USL President
Tim Holt said in a statement. “With Sacramento Republic FC and OKC Energy FC kicking off in 2014, this announcement continues to build the league’s
western presence, with additional announcements expected soon.”
For its first two seasons, the only team west of Ohio was the LA Blues. USL PRO added FC Phoenix for the 2013 season,
though its ownership group has since had its franchise rights revoked. (A new group is expected to keep the team in Arizona.)
The LA Galaxy is looking at starting a USL PRO team in place
of playing in the MLS Reserve League or having an affiliate relationship with a USL PRO club, and several other MLS could do the same in 2014 or 2015.
Ragain is also an owner and
founder of ME Engineers, a global mechanical and electrical engineering design firm, founded in 1981. He is also the broadcast lighting consultant for the Olympic Broadcast Systems, currently
preparing for the upcoming Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.
“It has been a life-long dream to own a professional sports franchise,” Ragain said. “We look forward to
building a franchise that soccer fans throughout the Colorado Springs region can be proud to support.”
