Spurs Fires AVB After Liverpool Defeat

Tottenham on Monday fired coach Andre Villas-Boas following Spurs’ 5-0 defeat at home to Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday. The heavy defeat, which came just three weeks after Manchester City thrashed AVB’s men 6-0 at the Etihad Stadium, appeared to be the final straw for the White Hart Lane board.

The official club statement read: "The club can announce that an agreement has been reached with head coach, Andre Villas-Boas, for the termination of his services. The decision was by mutual consent and in the interests of all parties." According to Sky Sports News, Russia coach Fabio Capello, Spurs director Franco Baldini, former Spurs coach Glenn Hoddle and Swansea coach Michael Laudrup head the shortlist of early candidates to replace AVB.

After leading Spurs to 72 points last season, which is a record EPL haul for a team not to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, the Portuguese was in negotiations for high-profile jobs at Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid. However, after choosing to stay, and after selling star man Gareth Bale to Real for $130 million over the summer, Tottenham has struggled for goals despite a spate of high profile additions to its squad, including Roberto Soldado, Paulinho, Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen.
