[NWSL 2014 COUNTDOWN] The Houston Dash has appointed Randy Waldrum, who led Notre Dame to national titles in 2004 and 2010, as the NWSL expansion team’s first head coach. He is the most established coach to leave the college ranks for a women's pro club since the first league, WUSA, launched in 2001.

In his 15 seasons at the helm of the Fighting Irish, the 57-year-old Waldrum compiled a 294-58-17 record and reached five national championship matches.

Waldrum had roots in Texas, having been born in Irving, played at Midwestern State and coaching at Baylor before he took the Notre Dame job in 1999.

"As a native Texan, I'm extremely excited to come home and begin this new challenge of building a great professional women's soccer team with the Houston Dash,” said Waldrum in a statement. “The city of Houston has always been a great supporter of soccer and the Houston Dynamo, and I'm anxious to get started on building a women's franchise with the Dash that will make them equally as proud."

On Friday, the NWSL announced Houston's first three players -- Whitney Engen, Teresa Noyola and Melissa Tancredi -- as national team allocations.
