[AMERICANS ABROAD] In his first start, Juan Agudelo set up Steve De Ridder's tying goal with a flick-on header as FC Utrecht held defending champion Ajax to a 1-1 tie to snap its four-game winning streak. Timmy Chandler's Nuremberg won its second straight game after going winless in the fall campaign with a 3-1 win at Hertha Berlin.

Sunday afternoon: Herculez Gomez, Edgar Castillo and teenager Paul Arriola started for Tijuana in its 3-0 loss at UNAM. A fourth American, Greg Garza, came on late in the game. Joe Corona did not dress.

Jozy Altidore
didn't score in Sunderland's 3-0 win at Newcastle, leaving him on two goals in 50 English Premier League matches, but he did everything but as the surging Black Cats won their third straight Tyne-Wear derby for the first time since 1922-23 and moved into a tie for 12th place, a remarkable turnaround for a team that spent almost all the fall in the basement.

Altidore did miss one good chance, but he otherwise gave the Newcastle fits as the lone striker up front. He was also involved in the second goal in the 23rd minute, playing a backheel for Jack Colback on the play that resulted in Adam Johnson's goal, his sixth league goal in the last three weeks.

Danny Williams scored his first goal since moving to England in Reading's 3-0 League Championship win at Millwall.

Belgian international Kevin Mirallas' free kick from 30 yards completed Everton's 2-1 comeback win over Aston Villa in a battle of American keepers, Tim Howard and Brad Guzan.

FRANCE. Alejandro Bedoya had several good chances in his hour on the field, but Nantes fell at Sochaux, 1-0, for only the home team's second win of the Ligue 1 season.
