Dortmund: Allianz Deal Makes Bayern Stronger

Borussia Dortmund general manager Hans-Joachim Watzke is worried that rival Bayern Munich, which is already 17 points ahead of his team in the league this season, will only become stronger thanks to the 110 million-euro ($149.5 million) cash injection that the club received in exchange for an 8.33 percent purchase of the club by German insurance giant Allianz on Tuesday. Allianz, which is also a sponsor, now owns the same amount of the club as Adidas and Audi.

"This development was predictable," Watzke said. "They've been negotiating with Allianz for a long time and I can only congratulate them on the deal, but the gulf to the rest of the Bundesliga is obviously going to grow further because of it."

Perhaps, but Bayern is not breaking any rules by selling the stake to Allianz. According to German league rules, only 25 percent of the club can belong to outside investors. Put together, Allianz, Adidas and Audi now own a combined 25 percent of the German treble winner. Read the original story...
