Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema each scored twice as Real Madrid set a Spanish record for most goals on German soil.
Benzema and Bale put Real ahead by two goals after 21 minutes before Ronaldo had his 10th and 11th goals of the competition and set up Benzema for his second goal. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored in stoppage time for Schalke 04.
The win gave seeded teams six wins in eight games on the road in the first leg of the round of 16. Chelsea had to settle for a 1-1 tie at Galatasaray a day after Manchester United fell at Olympiakos,
Frenchman Aurelien Chedjou's goal in the 65th minute for Galatasaray canceled out Fernando Torres'
early goal for Chelsea.
