[UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Wednesday] Real Madrid put on one of its greatest shows ever on the road, putting six goals -- several of them spectacular -- past Schalke 04 before the German club scored a consolation goal to make the final score 6-1 in Gelsenkirchen in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 series.

ROUND OF 16, First Legs
Schalke 04 1 Real Madrid 6
Galatasaray 1 Chelsea 1
Olympiakos 2 Man. United 0
Zenit St. Petersburg 2 Bor. Dortmund 4
Man. City 0 Barcelona 2
Arsenal 0 Bayern Munich 2
Bayer Leverkusen 0 Paris SG 4
AC Milan 0 Atletico Madrid 1

Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema each scored twice as Real Madrid set a Spanish record for most goals on German soil.

Benzema and Bale put Real ahead by two goals after 21 minutes before Ronaldo had his 10th and 11th goals of the competition and set up Benzema for his second goal. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored in stoppage time for Schalke 04.

The win gave seeded teams six wins in eight games on the road in the first leg of the round of 16. Chelsea had to settle for a 1-1 tie at Galatasaray a day after Manchester United fell at Olympiakos, 2-0.

Frenchman Aurelien Chedjou's goal in the 65th minute for Galatasaray canceled out Fernando Torres' early goal for Chelsea.
