'Caps rally for tie to clinch first place

[MLS PRESEASON: Rose City Invitational] A game-tying penalty kick from first-year Uruguayan forward Sebastian Fernandez in the 79th minute gave the Vancouver Whitecaps a 1-1 tie with the host Portland Timbers that was good enough to claim the Rose City Invitational in front of 13,779 fans at Providence Park.

Will Johnson
had scored on a free kick from 23 yards in the third minute for the Timbers, who went winless in their annual preseason tournament.

The San Jose Earthquakes finished second with a 1-0 win over Jamaica's Portmore United. Trinidadian Cordell Cato’s goal in the 39th minute gave the Quakes their second 1-0 win of the tournament.

The Quakes are off next weekend because of their participation in the Concacaf Champions League, so they will play one more preseason game Wednesday against USL PRO affiliate Sacramento Republic FC at CSU Stanislaus’ Warrior Stadium in Turlock.
