Altidore misses FA Cup quarterfinals

[AMERICANS ABROAD] A day after his manager, Gus Poyet, said he needed to show he deserved make the Sunderland 18-player squad, Jozy Altidore was again left out of the Black Cats' squad for a big game. But a week after missing the Capital One Cup final at Wembley because of what Poyet said was one of the toughest decisions of his career, Altidore sat out the FA Cup quarterfinals Sunderland lost to Hull City, 3-0, after picking up what Poyet said was an injury at training though the cub later said he was ill.

Saturday in Europe ...

Aron Johannsson scored two more goals -- the first with a lob of the keeper, the second following a nifty turn on the ball -- to give him 24 goals in all competitions this season for AZ and lead the Dutch club to a 4-0 win over Heracles. Terrence Boyd had an an assist for Rapid Vienna in its 1-1 tie with Wacker Tirol.

Weekend in Mexico ...

Jose Torres scored his first league goal since joining Tigres a year ago in its 3-0 win over previously unbeaten Liga MX leader Cruz Azul.

Three Californians made their Liga MX debuts: Dennis Flores, 20, for Apertura champ Leon, and Alejandro Guido, 19, for Tijuana on Friday and Gabriel Farfan, on loan from Chivas USA, for Chiapas on Saturday.

Tijuana, which plays the LA Galaxy in the Concacaf Champions League quarterfinals, started Americans Joe Corona and Greg Garza while Herculez Gomez and Guido came off the bench. Edgar Castillo, who usually starts at left back, was rested after playing for the USA against Ukraine on Wednesday.

DaMarcus Beasley and Michael Orozco were both carded in Puebla's 3-0 loss to Toluca.
