[MLS SPOTLIGHT] The New York Red Bulls have given Mike Petke a new contract. The extension follows a 2013 season that saw Petke lead the Red Bulls to their first Supporters' Shield as the team with the best record in MLS.

Petke, one of only 12 players to play 300 or more games in MLS, was as assistant coach with the Red Bulls when he was handed the head coaching job at the start of 2013 preseason training after overtures with several well-known coaches failed.

“Mike is a passionate coach with great potential and this improved contract is the club's way of recognizing last season’s Supporters’ Shield success,” said Red Bulls Sporting Director Andy Roxburgh. “In the highly competitive MLS, winning the regular-season title last year was a great achievement and provides Mike and the club with a good platform to build on.”

After a 4-1 loss at Vancouver to open the 2014 season, New York returns to Red Bull Arena for its home opener Saturday against the Colorado Rapids.
