Will the Brazilian DP jinx strike again?

[MLS PREVIEW: Week 1] The news that Brazilian forward Gilberto, the first of Toronto FC's offseason Designated Player signings, didn't travel with the club to Seattle for Saturday's opener because of a hip flexor injury is not a good sign. No Brazilian who entered the league as a DP signing has ever played a full season in MLS.

Brazilian DP Signings:
2007: Denilson (FC Dallas)
2011: Geovanni (San Jose)
2011: Jeferson (Sporting KC)
2013: Kleberson (Philadelphia)
2013: Rafael (D.C. United)
Note: Luciano Emilio wasn't elevated to DP status until after his MVP season with D.C. United in 2007.

The 24-year-old Gilberto made just one preseason appearance for Toronto. Coach Ryan Nelsen told the Toronto Sun his striker is still a few weeks away from being match fit. Michael Bradley and Jermain Defoe, the other DP signings, are expected to play.

Ridge Mahoney: Will Bruin starts off MLS season in style

PRO ASSIGNMENTS. PRO issued MLS refereeing assignments for Week 2. Once again, replacement referees will be used. They include Greek referee Ioannis Stravrides for Seattle-Toronto FC and Irish referee Alan Kelly for New York-Colorado.
