[MLS PREVIEW: Week 1] The news that Brazilian forward Gilberto, the first of Toronto FC's offseason Designated Player signings, didn't travel with the club to Seattle for Saturday's opener because of a hip flexor injury is not a good sign. No Brazilian who entered the league as a DP signing has ever played a full season in MLS.

Brazilian DP Signings:
2007: Denilson (FC Dallas)
2011: Geovanni (San Jose)
2011: Jeferson (Sporting KC)
2013: Kleberson (Philadelphia)
2013: Rafael (D.C. United)
Note: Luciano Emilio wasn't elevated to DP status until after his MVP season with D.C. United in 2007.

The 24-year-old Gilberto made just one preseason appearance for Toronto. Coach Ryan Nelsen told the Toronto Sun his striker is still a few weeks away from being match fit. Michael Bradley and Jermain Defoe, the other DP signings, are expected to play.

Ridge Mahoney: Will Bruin starts off MLS season in style
