[AMERICANS ABROAD]Eighteen of the 31 U.S. World Cup hopefuls started on teams in action abroad over the weekend. Among those who did not get off the bench were two possible starters:Jermaine Jones, who has only made two appearances lasting an hour each time since moving to Besiktas in Turkey, and Alejandro Bedoya, whose reduced playing time at Nantes has corresponded  with the Canaries' nine-game winless streak that has seen it fall to 13th in France's Ligue 1.

Leading Scorers (2013-14):
25+1 Aron Johannsson (AZ)
14 Terrence Boyd(Rapid Vienna)
9 Sacha Kljestan
(Anderlecht)
(Goals in all club competitions.)

MEXICO.Alejandro Guido, 19, made his first start, Fernando Arce, 17, made his Liga MX debut off the bench, and three other Americans -- Edgar Castillo, Herculez Gomez and Paul Arriola -- started for Tijuana in its 2-1 loss at Cruz Azul.

Arriola, the third American teen in the Xolos' lineup, set up Richard Ruiz for the game's first goal shortly before halftime, but Cruz Azul rallied for two goals from Marco Fabianin the second half.

Xolos rested many of their starters -- including two other Americans, Greg Garza and Joe Corona -- for Tuesday's Concacaf Champions League match against the LA Galaxy at the Estadio Caliente.

Three Americans started in Sunday's Puebla-Tigres match: DaMarcus Beasleyand Michael Orozco for Puebla and Jose Torres for Tigres, which won on the road, 1-0.

ENGLAND.Brad Guzan's Aston Villa beat leader Chelsea, 1-0, to shake up the English Premier League title race. Guzan made a couple of good saves early in the second half before Villa won on a late goal in a match that saw Chelsea have Brazilians Willian and Ramires red-carded and its manager, Jose Mourinho, ejected.
