Almost total dominance again doesn't translate into goals

[USA-CHINA] Perhaps prophetically, Tom Sermanni said in the U.S. Soccer pre-game video his goal for Sunday's USA-China game was for the USA to finish its chances -- something that had not happened at Algarve Cup. But despite a 25-1 edge in shots -- a dozen of them on goal -- the USA only beat China, 2-0. Within hours after the game, Sermanni was fired.

The Americans extended their unbeaten streak against China to 22 games with the win thanks to goals by Lauren Holiday and Megan Rapinoe.

Holiday, who missed last month's Algarve Cup, ran on to a blocked cross to fire home a low blast from 19 yards out and give the USA the lead in the 39th minute.

In the 78th minute, Rapinoe free kick from 28 yards out on the left side of the penalty area eluded the pack of players in the middle of the penalty area, bounced on the edge of the six-yard box and snuck into the right side of the net to give the USA a two-goal cushion.

Goalkeepers Hope Solo and Jill Loyden combined for the shutout in the match that drew 14,903 fans at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. The win extend the USA's record home unbeaten streak to 81 games (71-0-10) dating back to 2004.

The USA and China meet again at 8 p.m. PT (11 p.m. ET) on Thursday at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego (live on NBCSN). Jill Ellis will serve as interim coach for the USA.
