[AMERICANS ABROAD] Jose Torres became the first American to win Mexico's Copa MX when he started for Tigres in its 3-0 win over Alebrijes de Oaxaca in Wednesday's final played in Monterrey.

Oaxaca, which plays in the second division, had several early chances before Tigres went ahead in the 36th minute on a penalty kick by Juninho. The penalty was awarded after Juninho was dragged down in the area going for a Torres corner kick.

Mexican international Alan Pulido made it 2-0 in the 66th minute and Argentine-born Lucas Lobos added a third goal on a free kick in the 86th minute.

The Copa MX is held in each half-season and played by first division teams not involved in Concacaf Champions League or Libertadores Cup play and by second division teams.

The 2014 title is Torres' first with Tigres. He was on Pachuca teams that won three Concacaf titles, one Copa Sudamericana title and the Clausura 2007 league crown.
