[AMERICANS ABROAD] John Brooks continues to make a late case to make the U.S. national team's 30-player short list, scoring the winning goal in Hertha Bertha's 2-0 win over Eintracht Braunschweig. Elsewhere in Germany, Tim Chandler returned to action for the first time in more than two months with Nuremberg, while Joe Gyau made his Bundesliga debut for Hoffenheim.
Brooks scored in the
61st minute following a corner kick for his first goal since his Bundesliga debut on the opening day of the season. He has started in five of Hertha's last seven games.
Sidelined with a knee injury since early February, Chandler came on in the second half Nuremberg's 2-0 loss at Mainz.
Gyau, 21, is in his fourth season with
Hoffenheim, which signed him out of the U.S. under-17 residency program in 2009.
-- In the 2. Bundesliga, Andrew
Wooten had two goals for FSV Frankfurt in its 3-1 win over Energie Cottbus.
ENGLAND. Goalkeepers Tim Howard and Brad Guzan suffered long afternoons in the Premier League. Howard's Everton lost to Southampton, 2-0, on a
pair of own goals. Guzan's Aston Villa dropped a 4-1 decision to Swansea City in a match that saw Jonjo Shelvey score from more than 40 yards against Guzan.
France: Strong season boosts Bedoya's World Cup chances
FRIDAY NIGHT. Edgar Castillo and Joe Corona started for Tijuana in its 2-1 loss at home
to Leon that kept it from clinching a berth in Mexico's Torneo Clausura playoffs. Xolos sit seventh, but three teams -- Morelia and Atlas with wins and Guadalajara with a win by four or more goals --
still will have a chance to overtake them and claim berths in the eight-team Liguilla. Seven teams could finish tied for fourth place. Pachuca jumped ahead of Tijuana on goal difference when it came
back from 3-0 down at Queretaro with 15 minutes remaining to win 4-3.
