Three games to watch

[MLS: Week 9] The Columbus Crew has jumped out to the lead in the Eastern Conference, a point ahead of four teams, including defending champion Sporting Kansas City, which it hosts Sunday, but Argentine star Federico Higuain says how the Crew plays is more important than the results. For three games to watch this weekend.

Three straight wins have been followed by a loss and three draws, but that's been still good enough to take the lead in the Eastern Conference under first-year head coach Gregg Berhalter.

Higuain told Columbus reporters on Thursday one loss in seven games, following a strong preseason, makes him and his teammates believe in themselves. And he says that confidence is necessary for them to play the possession game Berhalter has stressed.

“For us, it's really important for everyone to understand that it's about how we play more than the result,” he said. “It's about showing the right type of soccer. Because the system that's put out there is very difficult to actually play. It takes time. And this, for us, is something that we know and understand, and it's important for everyone else to understand.”

-- Sporting KC will be without Aurelien Collin (suspended after picking up the first straight red card of his career against New England) and Sal Zizzo (who is injured).

Two other games to watch ...

TORONTO FC-NEW ENGLAND. The Toronto FC injury ward is emptying out. English star Jermain Defoe will be back for the first time in more than a month, but so will Doneil Henry, the young Canadian defender who looked so good in Toronto's opening pair of wins. After the first two weeks of the season, the Revs were six points down on Toronto, but they've gone 3-1-2 since then to move into a four-way tie for second place, two points ahead of Toronto.

VANCOUVER-SAN JOSE. Both Vancouver and San Jose are celebrating their 40th anniversaries this season, part of the old NASL expansion group of 1974 that also included the Seattle Sounders. A sellout crowd is expected at BC Place as the 'Caps commemorate the 40th anniversary with the honoring of the inaugural Whitecaps team -- among them current team president Bob Lenarduzzi -- prior to kickoff. The current 'Caps have produced some exciting soccer but only have a 2-2-4 record to show for it.
