[MLS: Week 9] Sporting Kansas City and the New York Red Bulls won on Sunday to join the New England in a three-way tie for first place in the Eastern Conference. New York, Sporting KC and New England finished 1-2-3 in 2013.

MLS: Saturday

Bradley Wright-Phillips scored his fifh goal in the last three games for New York, which is 3-0-1 in its last four games after starting out 0-2-4.

FC Dallas lost Jamaican Je-Vaughn Watson to a red card in the 10th minute, but it had a chance to go ahead in the 59th minute when Tim Cahill  fouled Danny Garcia in the area. Luis Robles saved Blas Perez's shot to keep the match even until the 71th minute when Thierry Henry, playing his 100th MLS match, set up Wright-Phillips.

It's the second straight loss for FC Dallas, which had opened 5-1-1 and has dropped to third place.

Sporting Kansas got goals from Jacob Peterson and Claudio Bieler to beat Columbus, 2-0, and take the lead in the Eastern Conference on goal difference over New England. New York is third based on total wins.

Sporting KC manager Peter Vermes said it was team's best performance of the season.

"I thought our organization to press them and not allowing them to play, especially when we were high up the field, was excellent," he said. "And then we weathered the storm a little bit in the second half, maybe for about 10-15 minutes when they had a little bit of the ball. But we really didn't give too much and we made sure we dropped our line well and cleared everything out of the box. [Eric] Kronberg made a big save [one-handed stop on Wil Trapp] in the first half, which we need him to do and he does it. And we scored two goals. The only criticism I have is we should have scored two more, easily. Outside of that, we were big time today."

Watching Kansas City I guess the concept of persistent fouling is no longer in the rule book. What makes it worse is that they are not fouls of passion or out-of-control, they are calculated cowardly kick-them-from-behind fouls on the other teams skill players, spread around among the thugs to minimize the cautions. What we used to call cheating.
