Report: Zelalem about to become U.S. citizen

[AMERICANS ABROAD] Gedion Zelalem, the 17-year-old Arsenal midfielder, is about to become a U.S. citizen, the Washington Post reported.

Zelalem, who was born in Germany to Ethiopian parents but raised in Maryland, would become eligible represent the United States. He has participated in U.S. youth camps but recently turned down an invitation to play for Germany's U-17 national team that would have barred him from ever playing for the U.S. national team if he had not gained his U.S. passport.

Steven Goff reported that Zelalem is eligible for citizenship under the Child Citizenship Act of 2000 and he could keep him German passport since he is a minor. He needs a German passport to play for Arsenal.
