[U.S. OPEN CUP] Chicago amateur team RWB Adria, U.S. Open Cup semifinalist in 1978 and 1991, advanced for the first time in the modern era as it opened the 101st edition of the national cup competition with a 3-1 shootout win at Detroit City FC after their match ended 2-2 thanks to Romanian veteran Vlad Baciu's equalizer in stoppage time.

Detroit City came back from 1-0 down on goals by Tyler Arnone and Kevin Taylor -- setting a modern record 11-year gap between Open Cup goals -- to take the lead in the second half. The match drew 753 fans in Livonia, Mich.

Founded in 1959 by Croatian immigrants, Adria advances for the first time in fifth appearance in the modern edition of the Open Cup. The USASA representative fell to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on penalty kicks last season.

-- The Western Mass. Pioneers beat Mass Premier Soccer, 4-1, thanks to two goals each by Will Daniels and Allen Carr.

-- The New York Red Bulls U-23s, one of four amateur or reserve teams associated with current or future MLS teams entered in the 2014 Open Cup, opened their campaign with a 2-1 win over the Vermont Voltage. The NPSL Red Bulls got goals from Danny Bedoya and Adrian Saldana.

-- Shastri Spencer's goal in the 114th minute gave FC Lehigh Valley United Sonic a 1-0 overtime win over GPS Portland Phoenix.

-- Perennial PDA power Ventura County Fusion came back from a goal down after five minutes to beat Aguiluchos USA, 2-1. Chongo Kennedy converted a 53rd-minute penalty kick for the equalizer, and Peter Gregory scored the game-winner nine minutes later.

-- Shorthanded PSA Elite overcame an overtime deficit to defeat LA Misioneros, 2-1, in the shootout after their gamed ended 1-1. Jose Preciado notched an equalizer in the 114th minute after Javier Castro put Misioneros ahead in the 94th minute.

-- David Olguin scored in the 81st minute to lift the USASA's Red Force past the USSSA champion Colorado Rovers, 2-1. Daniel Gomez started Red Force's rally with a penalty kick in the 67th minute.

-- Corinthians USA, the Southern California team coached by former Brazilian international Palhinha, had to forfeit against the San Diego Flash because it could not register enough players for its match.
