Sounders' rally mojo downs FC Dallas again

[MLS: Week 10] A comeback victory over FC Dallas set Seattle off on its current winning streak last month, and another bounce-back against the same foe Wednesday has extended that run to five games.

Obafemi Martins set up goals for Lamar Neagle and Kenny Cooper, the latter scoring in the final minutes, to drive Seattle past FCD, 2-1, in front of 38,849 fans at CenturyLink Field. Seattle (7-2-1, 22 points) increased its lead atop the Western Conference to four points over Real Salt Lake (4-0-5, 17 pts.).

FC Dallas (5-4-1, 16 points) could have moved into a first-place tie with Seattle by winning, and after the first 45 minutes it was on track to do just that. Michel’s penalty kick in the 16th minute, awarded when Brad Evans got caught in a tangle with FCD forward Blas Perez, brought it the 1-0 lead it took into the locker room at halftime.

He may have been lured to MLS last year to increase Seattle’s goalscoring power, but Martins’ range and guile are proving to be valuable setup attributes as well. He consistently found gaps in the attacking third during the first half despite the Sounders’ inability to score, and twice in the second half provided the decisive final passes.

Martins floated down the right wing to control a pass from Clint Dempsey and center it to the near post for Neagle, who from close range stabbed a shot into the top corner to tie the match in the 62nd minute. Martins worked the other side of the field to set up the winner, finding enough space on the left side to slide a ball into the goalmouth that Cooper drove home with his first touch of the game.

Seattle crosses the country for its next game at New England this weekend. FCD stays on the West Coast to play at San Jose.

EASTERN LOGJAM. Houston started off a run of three important home games by beating Columbus, 1-0, with a goal conjured up by Brad Davis and Will Bruin. Davis swung a free kick into a crowded goalmouth and Bruin got enough contact on the ball with the back of his head to guide home a shot five minutes into the second half. Davis earned his fourth assist in five games and Bruin’s goal scored for the third time in as many games to increase his season total to six. The win created a four-way tie for first place in the Eastern Conference.

The Dynamo continues its home run Saturday against Real Salt Lake and next week squares off with the Galaxy. Columbus, which lost its second straight and is winless in six, heads back home to host Vancouver.

-- In Wednesday's other MLS game, San Jose had to settle for a 0-0 tie at home with Colorado that left it with one win in eight games, but the point was good enough to move it out of the basement.

AMWAY CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIP. Michael Nonni's goal in stoppage time gave the NASL's FC Edmonton a 2-1 win over the Montreal Impact in the first leg of their Amway Canadian Championship semifinal. Montreal blew a 1-0 lead to leave it with one win in nine games this season in all competitions.

-- Toronto FC got goals from high-priced stars Jermain Defoe and Michael Bradley to defeat the Vancouver Whitecaps, 2-1, in the other match. A stoppage-time goal by teenager Kekuta Manneh could be valuable for the 'Caps when they return home for the second leg next Wednesday. The first leg drew 22,591 fans at BMO Field.
