Portugal coach: No worries for Cristiano Ronaldo

[WORLD CUP 2014] Portugal coach Paulo Bento eased the minds of Portuguese fans when he said he expected star Cristiano Ronaldo, the headliner in his 30-player squad for the World Cup, to be ready for Brazil.

“At the moment, we just need to see how things go and see what state he'll arrive in," Bento said. "Then we'll do the best we can to manage his condition."

Ronaldo has been bothered by various injuries and limped off the field in Real Madrid's 1-1 draw at Real Valladolid. He didn't play last weekend and isn't expected to play in La Liga final match. Real Madrid is working on getting him ready for the UEFA Champions League final against Atletico Madrid on May 24.

Portugal will open training camp May 21 and later move to the national team base at Praia d’El Rey before finishing up its pre-World Cup preparations at the New Jersey Jets' facility in Florham Park, N.J. It will face Mexico June 6 at Gillette Stadium and Ireland June 10 at MetLife Stadium.
 
Portugal opens Group G play against Germany June 16 in Salvador in a repeat of their Euro 2012 opener.
