Van Gaal Officially Named Man United Manager

Manchester United on Monday officially named Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal as its new manager, with Ryan Giggs his assistant. The 62-year-old Dutchman, who has won trophies with Ajax, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and AZ Alkmaar, has signed a three-year contract to succeed David Moyes, who was fired in April. It is unclear whether Giggs, 40, will continue as a United player, too. Giggs announced his retirement as a player.

"This club has big ambitions; I too have big ambitions," van Gaal said. "Together I'm sure we will make history." He added: "It was always a wish for me to work in the Premier League. To work as a manager for Manchester United, the biggest club in the world, makes me very proud. I have managed in games at Old Trafford before and know what an incredible arena Old Trafford is and how passionate and knowledgeable the fans are."

Said United EVP Ed Woodward: "His track record of success in winning leagues and cups across Europe throughout his career makes him the perfect choice.
